About This Call
Sympoiesis: Printmaking in the Expanded Field is an exhibition at Colorado State University's Clara Hatton Gallery. The exhibition's conceptual framework is derived from Donna J. Haraway's "Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene." Sympoiesis refers to the sharing of process through collective creation—a making with, rather than a self-making. The curators encourage applicants to interpret this term broadly and consider how shifting towards collective creation offers new modes of thinking or making, how printmaking materials and processes operate collectively as a form of Sympoiesis, and how printmaking encourages community collaboration.
All forms of traditional and experimental print media are eligible, including lithography, intaglio, relief, serigraphy, monotype, cyanotype, risograph, zines, and other alternative matrix-related prints. Collectives and individual artists working through prints on paper, textiles, or other substrates, including installation and print-based sculptural forms, are encouraged to apply. The exhibition features awards including a Juror's Merit Award, Curator's Merit Award, and Best Shipping and Packaging Award. The juror is Amze Emmons, Associate Professor and Area Head of Printmaking at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University. Curators are Andrew Meyer, Clara Hatton Gallery Coordinator, and Johnny Plastini, Assistant Professor and Area Coordinator of Printmaking at Colorado State University.
Applicants must submit a minimum of 3 images for 3 separate pieces of recent work from the past 5 years (2014-2019), with the option to include up to 2 images per piece for a total of 6 image uploads. A brief 200-word maximum artist statement addressing how the work engages the conceptual theme is required. Entry fee is $30. If selected, all work must be framed or otherwise gallery ready with installation instructions if necessary. Artwork must be received by January 14, 2020. Work will be de-installed on March 9, 2020 and shipped no later than March 14, 2020. Artists are responsible for shipping costs both to and from the gallery. Shipping containers must be reusable and efficiently/properly assembled.
