About This Call

Music is an art that awakens emotions and imaginative imagery. Many textile makers find a correlation between the notation of musical scores and textile drafts or patterns and use these similarities by blending fibers, patterns, and textures to evoke a feeling like a favorite melody. Art League of Rhode Island invites fiber artists to create works inspired by music for this exhibition.

In conjunction with Symphony in Fiber: Harmony in Color and Texture, Art League of Rhode Island is presenting Weavers Duet: The Works of Norma Smayda and Laurie Carlson Steger. Smayda's and Steger's works, both independently and collaboratively, are inspired by music. With themes and variations of tone and structure, their textile compositions express a lyrical mood in a weaver's duet.

The exhibition runs May 3-31, 2025 at Art League RI Gallery and Tiernan Hallway Gallery, 80 Fountain Street, Suite 107A, Pawtucket, RI 02860. Opening reception is Saturday, May 3, 2025, 5:30-7:30 pm, with closing reception on Saturday, May 31, 2025, 5:30-7:30 pm. Entry deadline is March 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fee is $30.00 plus $10.00 media fee. Artists must submit 1-2 images of work. Notification of acceptance will be provided by or on April 6, 2025.

All works must be wall-mounted with a maximum depth of 6" from the wall and maximum dimensions of 6'h x 6'w x 8"d. Maximum weight is 50 lbs. All hanging apparatuses must be easy to assemble for gallery staff. Artwork previously exhibited with ALRI is not permitted. All work must be original. Artists over 18 years of age are eligible. Art League RI members in good standing are eligible for a discounted entry fee; email [email protected] to request the discount code.

Awards: First Place $300, Second Place $200, Third Place $100, and two Honorable Mentions. Jurors include Susan Ward, curator and textile design specialist; Norma Smayda, Master Weaver and author; and Laurie Carlson Steger, Master Weaver and Dean of the Weavers' Guild of Boston.
