Symbolic

"Symbolic" is a juried visual art exhibition featuring artworks depicting, incorporating, or otherwise inspired by symbols, where symbolism itself is the subject matter and/or an expressive means to address other subjects. All interpretations of this theme are welcome. Artworks in all media, techniques, and styles are encouraged. Open to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius. Artists must be residents of the St. Louis region/200-mile radius when the show begins (January 13, 2018) in order to submit work and participate if selected.

The exhibition will be held at Art Saint Louis Gallery, 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis, from January 13-February 14, 2018. A free reception will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018, 5-7 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Entry fees are $35 for nonmembers and $20 for Art Saint Louis members. Submissions must include 1-6 images and up to 3 videos. Artworks must be completed between 2014-2017 and not previously exhibited in any juried exhibit in the St. Louis region during the 6 months prior to the exhibit dates or in Art Saint Louis Gallery.

Jurors are artist Cheri Hoffman and Terrence Dempsey, S.J., Founding Director of the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) and May O'Rourke Jay Endowed Chair in Art History at Saint Louis University. Awards of Excellence will be selected, including a $250 Best of Show Award and four non-cash Awards of Excellence. All five award recipients will be eligible for the "Honor Awards 2019" ten-artist curated exhibit presented at Art Saint Louis, June 15-July 18, 2019, curated by Jessica Mannisi. The deadline to submit works is October 23, 2017, 11:59 p.m. MST. Judging is conducted online using JPEGs only. Limit 3 original artworks per artist, with a maximum of 2 images per artwork (1 full view and either 1 detail or 1 alternate view). Specifications include size limits (not exceeding 6' wide or 7' tall for 2-d and wall-displayed work, including frame) and weight limits (2-d works not exceeding 40 lbs). No ceiling-installed work, floor-sitting work, or works directly affixed to gallery walls are permitted.
