About This Call

Spokane Falls Community College's Fine Art Department invites applications for Round 2 of the sƛ̓x̣etkʷ Artist-in-Residence Program. This fully funded three-month residency (January 5 - March 26, 2026) is open to emerging Native American artists who are enrolled members of a US Federally Recognized Tribe. Priority is given to Tribes of the Pacific Northwest, including the Spokane Tribe of Indians, Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, Nez Perce Tribe, and Schistu'umsh (Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Indians).

The residency includes a $3,000 monthly stipend (three payments), furnished off-campus housing, studio space in the newly constructed sƛ̓x̣etkʷ Fine and Applied Arts Building, and travel reimbursement up to $800. The 60,000 square foot building includes an 804 square foot Fine Art Gallery, studios, and specialty equipment including a bronze foundry. Artists working in ceramics, drawing, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture are eligible. Applicants need not have formal degree training but should have previous experience in their preferred medium. Those whose work engages with cultural traditions through materials, techniques, and subject matter are encouraged to apply.

The residency provides access to fine art department studio spaces and equipment, opportunities to observe classroom lectures and demonstrations, professional development options (open studio hours, artist talks, technical demonstrations, workshops, and mentoring), gallery apprenticeship, and the option to exhibit in the SFCC Fine Art Gallery with 100% of sales profits directed to the artist. A welcome reception will be hosted by the gallery. The artist-in-residence determines what artwork to create, what professional development to pursue, and how to engage with the community. Applications are reviewed by a diverse committee including Tribal representatives and SFCC faculty. The selected artist will be notified by November 3, 2025. Submit 5-10 current visual artwork samples (JPG, JPEG, PDF, or PNG format, max 30MB total), artist statement (no more than two pages), image list with titles and details, prior art experience or CV, and written statements describing intended artwork and areas of professional development interest.
