About This Call
The City of Denver's Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create original public artworks for the Sun Valley Neighborhood in Denver. The selection panel has identified at least two exterior sites for potential art opportunities and will select one artist or artist team for the allocated total budget of approximately $120,000 USD.
Sun Valley is a formally recognized neighborhood bound by Colfax Avenue and the Broncos Stadium to the north, Federal Boulevard to the west, 6th Avenue to the south, and the South Platte River to the east. The neighborhood is home to a diverse population including Denver's largest concentration of recent immigrants. This historically low-income community is undergoing massive redevelopment that will create over 800 mixed-income units in four phases.
The selection panel seeks artwork that reflects the rich diversity of cultures in the area and enhances the experience of families and communities. Artworks should be interactive, engaging, and safe for diverse ages and abilities, with direct community engagement in design, installation, and/or programming. The panel is open to artwork in all media and materials suitable for outdoor display, excluding two-dimensional works. Two potential sites have been identified: Rude Park at W. 13th Ave. and Decatur St., and the reconstructed W. 10th Ave. between Decatur St. and Bryant St. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, using highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for public display.
This project is open to artists residing in Colorado. Applicants may apply as a single artist or multi-person collaborative group. Submissions must include six digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest no longer than 2,000 characters via www.callforentry.org. The selection panel will choose three to five finalists who will create site-specific proposals and participate in virtual interviews. Finalists will receive an honorarium. The selected artist or team will work with Public Art Program staff and the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure to finalize designs for installation. Entry deadline: Monday, March 22, 2021, 11:59 pm MST.
