About This Call
Sugar Rush is an exhibition exploring the presence and cultural significance of sugar in contemporary life. The exhibition will feature artworks addressing the topic from multiple perspectives—works may celebrate sweetness, criticize it, or reference it in technique. Artists are encouraged to explore the saturated, rainbow colors of candy or the thick swirls of cake frosting. Works can be any 2D or 3D mediums including works on paper, prints, books, paintings, photography, sculptures, and installation.
The guest juror and co-curator is Rhonda Coleman, a nationally-recognized arts professional with over twenty years of experience in the art and design field. Coleman has held positions at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and USC's Fisher Gallery, and was co-director of the Red Arrow Gallery in Joshua Tree, CA.
A maximum of three entries are allowed per artist with a $35 entry fee. Work samples must include a minimum of 5 images and a maximum of 11 total samples (5 images, up to 3 audio files, and up to 3 video files). Artists are responsible for transportation, shipping, and insurance costs. Selected work must be dropped off by December 6, 2014. The exhibition runs December 13, 2014 – January 17, 2015, with an opening reception on December 13 from 6pm-9pm. Work pick-up is January 18. Artists determine retail prices with a 60/40 commission split to the artist. Notification of results will be sent November 25, 2014. International artists are eligible.
