About This Call
The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University's Department of Visual Arts invites applications from artists working in any discipline for a one-month residency from September 21 to October 16, 2015. The program seeks artists interested in communicating their conceptualization process through visual documentation within an academic environment. The selection committee is particularly interested in project proposals from artists willing to share how they initiate and develop personal ideas, and is less interested in the production of art through processes involving media and craft. The residency project does not necessarily need to include the completion of artwork in permanent media. During the residency, the selected artist must communicate their project progression with visual arts students and faculty through open studio hours.
The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes 4-6 hours of open studio time per week. The artist will give a public visual presentation of their artwork in the South Dakota Museum of Art Auditorium and present visual progress of the residency project through exhibition at the end of the term. The program provides 24/7 access to a 660 sq. ft. lockable studio space with basic studio furniture. The Visual Arts Department may provide access to specific equipment and facilities based on artist needs. Housing is provided in a university-owned four-bedroom guesthouse with a private lockable bedroom and full access to kitchen, living, laundry and parking facilities. A $2,000 honorarium is awarded. All transportation, materials, supplies, meals and personal expenses are the artist's responsibility.
Applications are due April 10, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Submit through www.callforentry.org with a statement of residency project intent, professional resume not exceeding three pages, list of three professional references, 10-20 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to the statement of project intent, and an image description list. For audio and/or video, provide web-link information within the resume. Entry fee: $10. The program is open to artists nationally, with special encouragement for applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region.
