About This Call
The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University's School of Design invites applications from artists working in any discipline who are willing to communicate their conceptualization process through drawing as dialogue and/or documentation. The selection committee is particularly interested in project proposals from artists whose practices are grounded in drawing and who can share how they initiate and develop personal ideas through active and prolific application of drawing. The university especially encourages applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region.
The residency runs September 26-October 21, 2016, and provides a $2,000 honorarium. The selected artist will receive 24/7 access to a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space within an academic environment, basic studio furniture, and a furnished, fully equipped one-bedroom apartment. The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes up to 10 hours of open studio time per week to share project development with students, faculty, and the university community. The artist must give a public lecture at the South Dakota Museum of Art Auditorium during the second week of the residency and will culminate the residency with an exhibition in The School of Design Ritz Gallery.
Applications require a statement of residency project intent, professional resume (not exceeding three pages), list of three professional references, and 10-20 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to the project statement. For audio and/or video, provide web-link information within the resume. Entry fee is $15.00. All transportation, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the artist.
