About This Call
The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University's School of Design invites applications from artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches. The 4-week residency runs September 18-October 13, 2017, and offers a $2,000 honorarium. Project intent should emphasize the artist's conceptualization process documented through any visual approach.
The residency provides 24/7 access to a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space within an academic environment, plus housing in a furnished 2 or 3-bedroom university-owned apartment with a lockable bedroom suite and private bathroom. The resident artist must maintain a full-time working schedule with at least 10 hours of open studio time per week to share project development with students, faculty, and the university community. The artist is required to give a public lecture at the South Dakota Art Museum and participate in an open studio event and exhibition in the School of Design Ritz Gallery. Transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses are the artist's responsibility.
Applications should include a statement of residency project intent, professional resume (not exceeding three pages), list of three professional references, and 10-15 images of completed artwork or images relevant to the project intent. For audio and/or video, provide web-link information within the resume. The application fee is $15.00. South Dakota State University especially encourages applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region.
