About This Call

Auburn StreetScape is a program that seeks to enliven and activate otherwise empty storefront windows in Auburn's Historic Downtown by providing temporary space to artists, creative businesses, organizations and community groups. Applications for Static Installations and Active Enterprise are accepted on a rolling basis and placed as spaces become available. Auburn StreetScapes is a partnership between the City of Auburn and Auburn Downtown Association.

Static Installations are non-commercial artistic displays in any medium, installed in or on a window and viewable from the street by pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Work that is site specific is encouraged and not intended to be an exhibition display of two-dimensional existing artwork (unless part of an overall treatment). There is no public access into the installation space. Installations may include video projections or other light elements, but successful proposals will engage passers-by both in daylight and in darkness. Active Enterprise provides a place to experiment and test out new creative business ideas. Active Enterprise participants will have access to a space for three to six months, dependent on space availability and number of applicants. Active Enterprise spaces are open to the public and participants must hold appropriate City of Auburn and State of Washington licenses and permits, as well as a general liability insurance policy. Selected artists and/or artist teams will be required to hold set business hours.

Individual artists, arts groups, or arts businesses located in the Pacific Northwest region may apply. Arts groups are not required to have 501(c)(3) status. All applicants will be selected based on innovation and engagement with the idea of empty retail space, capacity to be successful, benefit to the community and appropriateness for the public realm, high level of engagement with the street and passers-by, and artistic quality. If selected for a Static Installations project, you will receive access to a vacant space within the downtown area and a $500 honorarium. There will be no occupancy fee, and the program will pay all reasonable utilities costs and liability insurance. If selected for an Active Enterprise project, you will receive access to a vacant space in downtown Auburn with no occupancy fee and no honorarium. The occupant will pay for all reasonable utility costs. Selected participants must enter into an agreement with Auburn Downtown Association, be willing to relocate if the property owner finds a permanent tenant, present high quality artwork and/or service activity, partner with Auburn StreetScape to market and promote events and activities, and comply with all federal, state, and local laws. Active Enterprise participants must hold a General Liability insurance policy. The StreetScape panel and staff will pair applicants with available spaces based on the needs of the applicants and the space. Acceptance into the StreetScape program is not a guarantee that you will be provided a location. Submit a Project Proposal, Artist Statement, Artist Resume, Representative Images (1 minimum/10 maximum), and Annotated Image List through the CaFe online system.
