About This Call
Every landscape holds a story, every place is more than the ground we stand upon. Whether it's a childhood fishing spot, a trail used for generations, or a view that feels like home, these places carry meaning that art can make visible. Storied Ground invites artists to share the emotional, historical, and sensory connections they hold with specific sites across Hawaiʻi and traditions born of this place. Perhaps your practice is informed by or reinterprets local materials, motifs, and stories for a contemporary moment. Or maybe your artistry captures the essence of your experience of this place through realism or abstraction.
Storied Ground acknowledges the many layers that make up the island's identity: natural, cultural, and emotional. The resulting exhibition will create a shared portrait of Hawaiʻi as experienced by those who live and create within it, or have been inspired by it. Through painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, or digital work, artists are encouraged to express how place itself becomes both subject and storyteller. This exhibition honors the idea that understanding a place begins with attention -- to detail, to memory, to the small things that reveal the larger story.
The juror is Public Art Specialist Kelly White, who has over 25 years of experience as an arts administrator and advocate for community development programs. Artists must be 18 years of age or older to submit artwork. The submission fee is $25 for the first sample and $5 for each additional media sample. Artists notifications will be made via email by Monday, December 22, 2025, and shipped artwork must be received by Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
