About This Call
Storefronts Seattle, in partnership with the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, seeks artists to develop installations for vacant storefronts in Seattle's Pioneer Square, Chinatown-International District, and other neighborhoods. Installations will activate empty storefronts during a 90-day installation period between March 2011 and January 2012. Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and new media artwork is welcome, including video, film, light, sound, or combinations. Artists will receive $500 per installation and may be selected for more than one installation. The call is open to artists living within 100 miles of Seattle.
Artists may apply as a team, with the application clearly describing each collaborator's contribution. Current or previously produced artwork may be included as work samples. Application materials must be submitted digitally and include a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), a resume, and up to 10 digital images with title, date, media and description. Optional web links to multimedia work samples are also accepted.
Selection is based on artistic merit, feasibility, and appropriateness for a public storefront. Strong preference is given to proposals that activate a storefront in a unique way rather than using the space as a gallery. Applicants should consider the relationship of their proposal to street activity and the goal to engage passersby. Selected artists must be able to install during one of these periods: March 15-June 15, 2011; July 1-September 30, 2011; or October 15, 2011-January 15, 2012. A panel of arts professionals and neighborhood representatives will review submissions. Applicants will be notified by email of the panel's decision by mid-February 2011. Contact Ellen Whitlock Baker at (206) 905-1026 or [email protected] for questions about the program.
