About This Call

The Town of Jackson, Teton County, and Jackson Hole Public Art announce a competition to commission site-specific artwork(s) for the Stilson Transit Center in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Stilson Transit Center is located at a community crossroads including the movement of humans, wildlife migration, geological forces, and a wild and scenic river. The transit center will serve commuters from Idaho, residents traveling to and from Jackson and Wilson, recreationists visiting Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the Snake River, and visitors to Grand Teton National Park. The artwork will be commissioned by the Town of Jackson and owned by Teton County with public art project administration provided by Jackson Hole Public Art. Artists and artist teams with knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, those who live within this area, and Indigenous artists from the GYE may be given preference.

The commissioning process includes four phases: qualification submission; finalist selection and site-specific concept design development with $600 honorarium for 3-5 selected artists; final design development at $10,000 for one artist; and commission agreement for fabrication and installation at $110,000 (inclusive of all artist fees, insurance, fabrication, installation, engineering, foundations, travel, and all other project-related expenses). The selection panel will identify 3-5 artists whose qualifications best fit the project goals. Invited artists will create site-specific proposals, and the panel will select the concept best fitting project goals. One finalist will be invited for a site-visit and community interaction to refine their concept into a final proposal.

The artwork must be made of durable media requiring little to no maintenance aside from annual cleaning and should be able to be touched if within touching distance to passersby. Artwork should be site-specific, properly scaled to the building's architecture, and visually integrated into the overall design. The building serves users of all ages and abilities, and artwork should inspire and engage a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Artists are encouraged to consider Jackson Hole's history, the unique character of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, geological and natural forces of the area, and present and past inhabitants of the region. Potential locations include stand-alone ground-level sculpture, exterior wall art, mural integrated into landscaped mound, bike shelter parking area, interior wall space, rain garden integration, and areas between parking lot and bike path. Work sample requirements: 6 images minimum/maximum. Eligibility: National. Entry deadline: 3/15/24 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact: [email protected].
