About This Call

The Steel District in partnership with The Washington Pavilion requests qualifications from experienced and innovative artists and/or artist teams interested in creating a site-specific, monumental sculpture that seamlessly integrates technology. This public art installation will enhance the landscaping in a vehicle roundabout at The Steel District in Sioux Falls, SD, serving as a dynamic focal point for both residents and visitors in a brand new development.

The project budget is $400,000.00 (inclusive of all costs associated with design, fabrication, transportation, and installation). The manufacturing timeline runs from June 2024 to April 2025. Artists and artist teams should create a monumental sculpture that explores the intersection of tradition and technology, embodying a sense of grandeur while incorporating innovative technological elements. The artwork should be designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and require minimal maintenance. Consider incorporating elements that reflect the culture, history, or spirit of Sioux Falls.

Submissions must include up to 10 images of sample work (existing, installed projects only), up to 3 video files of previous work, CV/Resume, 3-5 current references, and a Statement of Interest explaining your interest in the project. Work samples should demonstrate style, level of workmanship, and excellence in use of materials. Qualifications will be evaluated based on artistic merit and innovation, integration of technology, feasibility within budget and timeline, compatibility with The Steel District's surroundings, professional experience with similar scale projects, ability to meet the timeline, and demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders and community groups. Finalists will be selected in May 2024, followed by design time and site visits. Final proposals are due June 25, 2024, with the final artist selected June 26, 2024. The selected artist will receive a $400,000 commission. Contact Jana Anderson at [email protected] for inquiries.
