About This Call
BART is issuing a Request for Qualifications from artists residing in California for art projects at the El Cerrito del Norte Station. One artist or artist team will be selected to design and fabricate two wall-mounted artworks comprised of glass or ceramic mosaics to be located in an expanded area of the station.
The art opportunity includes the design and fabrication of two glass or ceramic mosaic artworks for the east and west concourse walls. Each wall space measures approximately 8' high and 42' wide. The artwork may be designed to fill all or part of this area. The artwork theme will be developed by the selected artist or team, but the color palette should reference and complement the historic Pardiñas murals in the station. The art should be designed and fabricated on panels that can be installed by BART contractors.
Eligibility is limited to artists residing in California who are U.S. citizens or have legal working status in the United States. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of five years of work as a practicing artist and a minimum of five years of experience producing architecturally scaled glass or ceramic mosaic art installations. Applications will be accepted only from artists whose work is being submitted in response to this RFQ; applications submitted by third parties will not be considered. The budget is $180,000 and must include design development, fabrication, engineering, delivery costs, installation guidelines and oversight, professional consultants, the artist's project management fees, insurance, and all other costs associated with the art project. BART will be responsible for installation costs and will expect the selected artist to be on-site and provide guidance during installation. Selected artists must waive their rights of integrity as pertains to removal or repair of the artwork, will retain copyright but grant BART certain reproduction rights, and must adhere to BART's Model Agreement for Final Design, Fabrication and Transportation of the Artwork.
