About This Call

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is issuing a Request for Qualifications from artists residing in California for art projects at the 19th Street Station in Oakland. This RFQ is open only to artists residing in California who are U.S. citizens or have legal working status in the United States and are at least 18 years old. Bay Area artists are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted only from artists whose work is being submitted in response to this RFQ; applications submitted by third parties such as galleries, art consultants, or family members will not be considered.

Three separate station projects will be awarded through this call process. Each art opportunity consists of the production of original artwork that will be digitally produced and applied via high-resolution printing onto one of three permanent backlit displays made of 3 Form Chroma polycarbonate material, placed in one of the station's stairwells. The artwork is intended to be permanent within the station. Each display will measure approximately 9'-7" w x 9'-7" H x 5" D and will be configured of nine individual smaller square panels. The selected artwork must be produced as vector drawings (AI or EPS files) or photographs (TIFF or PSD files) at a resolution of 300 dpi at full scale. Selected artists must specify RGB colors and supply artwork as full-scale files for each individual panel with a 1" bleed on all edges. Each artist or artist team selected will receive a fee of $15,000 for the development and final design of the artwork, the production of professionally produced graphic files, and for conferring with BART during fabrication.

Applicants must demonstrate a history of professional activity as an artist with a minimum of five years of work as a practicing artist and must demonstrate appropriate skills or experience in designing and managing an art project relative to the scale and complexity described. Selected artists or artist teams will be required to waive their rights of integrity to commissioned artwork as pertains to its removal or repair. Selected artists will retain copyright to their work but will grant BART certain rights to reproduction; neither party will retain the right to reproduce the artwork for commercial purposes. Two or more artists may apply together as a team, but each artist may submit only one application for one project and may not apply as a member of more than one team. Work sample requirements: minimum 4 images, maximum 8 images.
