Station Art Project at Powell Street BART Station

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is issuing a Request for Qualifications from artists residing in California for an art project at Powell Street Station in San Francisco. This RFQ seeks to select three finalists to compete for a single art opportunity consisting of an artistic treatment on the ceiling and four columns near the Hallidie Plaza/Westfield Mall entrance lobby area.

The art opportunity consists of original artwork that will be digitally reproduced and applied onto a backlit circular sculptural form on the ceiling (approximately 16' in diameter), made of 3 Form Chroma polycarbonate material. The selected artist will also design complementary artwork for placement on four existing stainless steel columns surrounding the centroid. Column treatment may consist of a band of 3 Form Chroma or other treatments such as sculptural, etched, or painted work. Applicants must submit 4-8 images of their work.

Eligibility is restricted to artists residing in California who are U.S. citizens or have legal working status in the United States and are at least 18 years old. Applications will be accepted only from artists submitting their own work; applications from galleries, art consultants, or other third parties will not be considered. Selected artists must waive their rights of integrity under the California Art Preservation Act and Visual Artists Rights Act as pertains to removal or repair. Selected artists will retain copyright but grant BART certain reproduction rights, with neither party retaining the right to reproduce the artwork for commercial purposes.
