About This Call

The Utah State Archives Art Selection Committee is requesting qualifications from artists and artist teams residing in the Western United States (Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming) interested in creating site-specific artwork for the new expansion project of the Utah State Archives facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The State Archives facility is located at 346 S Rio Grande St, Salt Lake City. The expansion project involves extending the storage vault and automated storage retrieval system by 29'6" to the west, creating an additional 76,950 cubic feet in remodeled space and 137,700 cubic feet in additional space. The Art Selection Committee would like commissioned artwork to reflect the role of the Archives as a repository of collective memory, documenting the people of Utah and preserving the records of democratic government. Potential sites for artwork include: the interior atrium of the original facility (two-story open space), the east and northeast exterior areas of the original facility, and the exterior south and west surfaces of the new storage vault for 2D or dimensional work.

A budget of $25,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and other costs. Applicants must submit a letter of interest (maximum two typewritten pages), up to six images of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum on longest side, 72 dpi, under 2MB file size), a document identifying each image with title, year, medium, and dimensions, and a professional resume in PDF format. Applications may be submitted online via www.callforentry.org or by USB thumb drive. The deadline for receipt of preliminary materials is April 16, 2018. Finalists will be selected and invited to present proposals to the Selection Committee on June 25, 2018. An honorarium will be offered to finalists to assist with proposal preparation and travel costs, which will be applied toward the final commission amount.
