About This Call

The Stapleton Community Garden is a public art project for a recently established community garden located at Spruce Street and 23rd Avenue in Stapleton, Denver. The garden measures 8,735 square feet and is divided into 37 plots used by single-family homeowners, town home residents, and families from adjacent low-income Parkside Apartments. This community garden is one of more than 70 gardens managed by Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) throughout the Denver metropolitan area. The artwork will serve as a transition between the garden and the larger community, with key benefits of community gardens—recreation, healthy lifestyles, experiential learning, and social and cultural connections—informing the commissioned work.

Artwork may include one or more garden features such as shade structures, benches, gateways, hose reel posts, fencing, and/or tool sheds. The artwork may be a single element or multiple elements and should be visible and appreciated by people living, working, and gardening in the area. The artwork must be durable, require minimal and low-cost maintenance, and withstand Denver's intense sun, snow, wind, and temperature extremes. It must not interfere with the garden's function or hinder gardeners, and must comply with City and County of Denver rules and regulations.

Applications must be submitted electronically via CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org by midnight, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 (MST). Each application must include a current resume, eight (8) digital images of relevant work with annotations listing media, size, title, date and brief description, and an artist's statement not exceeding 250 words or 1000 characters. All applicants must be legal residents of the United States. On February 26th, the Project Selection Committee will review materials and invite three finalists to submit full proposals and receive a design fee. Final selection will occur in mid-May following finalist interviews and review by the Public Art Advisory Committee and Board of Park Creek Metropolitan District.
