About This Call
Stapleton announces an opportunity for public art for the Central Park Recreation Center. The budget for this commission is approximately $262,000, which may be allocated to one or more projects for this site.
The Central Park Recreation Center, located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Emporia Street, is a 56,700 square foot facility that will include a gymnasium, leisure and lap pools, fitness areas, locker rooms, multipurpose community rooms, child care, administrative offices, and a catering kitchen. The design creates three zones of interest: the front entrance with a 50' x 100' scored concrete plaza; interior spaces representing recreational activity and interaction; and the west entrance connecting to Westerly Creek and Central Park with a curved glass wall capturing mountain views. Artists may address any or all of the zones in their proposals, and multiple artists will be considered.
Artwork should respond creatively to or complement the character of the facility and be appropriate to the diverse urban community of Stapleton. Artwork must not be a hazard to safety and should not display aviation themes or use recycled airplane parts. Artwork must be sustainable, durable, require low maintenance, and comply with City and County of Denver rules and regulations. Interior artwork must be attentive to recreation center environmental conditions. Exterior artwork must withstand intense sun, wind, and temperature extremes. Water features will not be considered.
Applications must include a current resume, eight digital images of relevant work with annotations listing media, size, title, date and description, and an artist's statement of interest not exceeding 300 words or 1000 characters. All materials must be submitted electronically via the CaFÉ website at www.callforentry.org. Finalists will receive a design fee and, if residing outside Colorado, a travel stipend. Eligibility: All applicants must be legally residing in the United States.
