About This Call
The City and County of Denver is seeking an artist or team of artists to create a public artwork for the new Stapleton Branch Library, a 28,000 square foot building designed as a community anchor incorporating the latest library technology and sustainable practices. The selection panel is looking for artists with experience in early integration practices and collaborative work with design teams. The panel seeks a lasting, timeless signature artwork that integrates into the building, with no designated specific areas—artists are encouraged to explore both interior and exterior spaces. There is strong interest in an interior piece visible from the exterior that invites people to enter the building.
The artwork should utilize the building's abundance of natural light and work with natural luminescence in an enticing and meaningful way. It should address the high energy level of the Stapleton community and the library itself, with interest in interactive and educational artwork appropriate for a diverse community of all ages. The artwork must be durable and easily maintained.
Up to five artists or artist teams will be short-listed as semi-finalists and asked to return for an interview or prepare a proposal. Semi-finalists will receive an honorarium of $750-1,250 to prepare and present a broad conceptual proposal and will have the opportunity to conduct a site visit. The final selection will be presented to the Public Art Subcommittee, Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, and Mayor for approval. Selected artists must enter into a contract with the City and County of Denver and obtain required insurance. Applicants must submit eight digital images of previously completed artworks, a statement of interest (500 words/2,000 characters maximum), and a one- to two-page résumé via the CaFÉ online application system. Artists submitting kinetic, sound, or media works must also submit a DVD of no more than five minutes to the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs.
