About This Call
The Stanley Hotel of Estes Park, Colorado invites artists from the continental United States to apply for a sculpture project that will serve as the centerpiece for the newly designed Maze at the front of the main hotel. The sculpture will be centered in a circular area 10.5 feet in diameter within a 10,100 sq. ft. hedge maze inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. The base of the sculpture may be up to 4 feet in circumference.
The sculpture must be made of durable, permanent media that is safe and requires little to no maintenance. Artwork should be site-specific and properly scaled to its surroundings. This location will be subject to strong winds and extreme temperatures, and the installation must include an applied protective surface. There are no restrictions on the subject of the sculpture except that the artistic style and appropriateness must be complementary of the community and The Stanley Hotel property. The project budget is $50,000 and does not include installation of the plinth (base). Payments to the sculptor will be made in thirds: 1/3 at the beginning, 1/3 for casting costs, and 1/3 at completion. Installation of the sculpture will be at the owner's expense, and the artist must be on-site for installation.
Artists from the continental United States are eligible to apply. Sculptors must have professional experience delivering projects of similar scale, scope and budget of $50,000 or more, and must demonstrate the ability to undertake the design, creation and installation of the artwork within the timeline. The artist must be willing to work closely with The Stanley Hotel project team and landscape designers on design elements. Applicants must submit a letter of interest, current resume, references (if selected as a finalist), and photographs or digital images of past artwork along with a digital sketch, photograph or computer rendering of the proposed artwork. Entry fee is $20. Three finalists will be chosen and notified by November 18, 2015. Finalists will each receive an honorarium of $1000 plus a travel stipend and will make a presentation with a maquette on March 9, 2016. The winner will be announced on March 10, 2016. Fabrication is scheduled for March 10 – September 1, 2016, with delivery and installation on September 15, 2016.
