About This Call
The Allied Arts Council and the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri seek sculptures to be placed in Downtown Saint Joseph for a one-year exhibition scheduled from June 2016 through May 2017. Regional, national, and international sculpture artists are invited to submit work. Selected sculptures will receive a $500 honorarium, and all selected works will compete for up to $13,000 in cash prize awards. The Allied Arts Council will purchase one sculpture to become a permanent part of Saint Joseph's public art collection; only pieces priced $15,000 or less will be considered for purchase. The Allied Arts Council will receive a 25% commission on any sculpture sold and on any commissioned sculptures.
Artists must own the rights to their artwork, and sculptures must be available for the full one-year contract duration. All submissions must be professionally constructed of durable materials that will withstand outdoor elements. Artists may submit up to four sculptures, with each submission requiring three images showing front view, back view, and one detail shot. All dimensions and stated insurance value must be provided. Sculptures will be placed within well-traveled streetscapes, and the installation method should use welded tabs or similar easy-install methods. Selected artists are responsible for transportation to and from the installation site. The Allied Arts Council will cover all costs for initial installation, including site preparation, plinth, and cleanup. The Council will provide $5,000 in liability insurance and inland marine insurance coverage for all sculptures during the exhibition.
Eligibility is open to professional and amateur sculptors of all backgrounds, age 18 and older. Entry requires submission of a brief biography, CV/resume, artist's statement, installation and removal directions, and three JPEG images per entry (minimum 1920 pixels on longest side, 72 ppi/dpi, maximum 5 MB). The entry fee is $15.00 per sculpture. All entries must be fully completed and submitted by February 3, 2016. Proposals and computer renderings are accepted if sufficiently detailed with narrative and supporting materials. Sculptures must be structurally secured to concrete pad or metal base with anchor bolts, capable of withstanding adverse weather, fabricated with non-hazardous materials, maintenance-free for the exhibition duration, and appropriate for an active pedestrian environment. An artists' reception and awards ceremony will be held Friday, June 10, 2016, followed by the first official sculpture walk. Jury notification of acceptance will occur on or before March 11, 2016.
