About This Call
The Allied Arts Council and the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri seek sculptures to be placed in Downtown Saint Joseph. Regional, national, and international sculpture artists are invited to submit work for this one-year sculpture exhibition scheduled from June 2015 through May 2016. Selected sculptures will be exhibited throughout downtown Saint Joseph and competing for up to $13,000 in cash prize awards (1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and People's Choice). Selected artists will receive a $500 honorarium. The Allied Arts Council will purchase a sculpture to become a permanent part of Saint Joseph's public art collection; only pieces priced $15,000 or less will be considered for purchase. The Allied Arts Council will receive a 25% commission on any sculpture sold and on any commissioned sculptures.
Artists must own the rights to the artwork and the sculpture must be available for the duration of the one-year contract. All submissions must be professionally constructed of durable materials that will withstand the elements. Artists may submit up to four sculptures for consideration at $15.00 per entry. Each submission must include three images clearly showing front and back views and one detail shot, dimensions, and stated insurance value. Sculptures will be placed within well-traveled streetscapes and should use welded tabs or similar easy-install methods. Selected artists are responsible for transportation to and from the installation site. The Allied Arts Council will cover all costs for materials and workmanship for initial installation, including site preparation, plinth, and cleanup. The Allied Arts Council will provide $5,000 in liability insurance and inland marine insurance coverage on all sculptures for the exhibition duration.
Eligibility is open to professional and amateur sculptors of all backgrounds, at least 18 years of age. Entry requires submission of a brief biography, CV/resume, artist's statement, installation and removal directions, and artist photo. Proposals and computer renderings are accepted if specific and include narrative and support materials. No sculpture entries identical to sculptures already placed or to be placed in other similar public sculpture programs within 200 miles of Saint Joseph will be considered. Sculptures must be capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions, fabricated with non-hazardous materials, maintenance-free for the exhibition duration, and appropriate for an active pedestrian environment. An artists' reception and awards ceremony will be held June 12, 2015, followed by the first official sculpture walk. The People's Choice Award voting period runs June 2015 through January 2016, with announcement in February 2016.
