About This Call

Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends 2018 is an exhibition for high school students (9th–12th grade) and undergraduate/graduate students enrolled in or independently pursuing fiber/textile studies in the Southeast (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia).

Each student may submit up to three original works completed between January 1, 2016 and July 21, 2018. Work must utilize fiber techniques (interlaced, felted, stitched, dyed, coiled, knotted, printed, spun, woven, etc.) and can be of any material. Work is limited to 50 pounds including mounting hardware and must be less than six feet wide (larger work considered if space available). Only individual work is accepted; group projects are not eligible. Students proposing installation work must be prepared to personally install and remove their work.

Submissions are digital only through CaFE and must include an artist statement (1,000 characters maximum), JPEG/JPG images (minimum 1200 pixels on longest side, maximum 5 MB file size), and a $30 non-refundable entry fee ($20 for SEFAA members). Each work should include a full view with up to two detail images. The exhibition takes place at The Fine Arts Center, 102 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609. Opening and reception: October 5, 2018; closing: November 2, 2018. Notification of acceptance: August 21, 2018. Deadline for delivery of accepted work: September 21, 2018. Deadline for pick-up: November 16, 2018.

Awards include First Place ($800), Second Place ($500), Third Place ($300), Honorable Mentions, and the Alice Schlein Award ($500). Additional awards from Handweavers Guild of America, Complex Weavers, and Surface Design Association. Juror: Rachel Meginnes. Artists may sell work through the show with no commission charged (20% donation recommended). The Fine Arts Center will insure all work while on display.
