SPACES Sculpture Trail

The SPACES Sculpture Trail partners are seeking artist submissions for the 5th biennial community-wide sculpture initiative. The 2019-21 SPACES Sculpture Trail will feature over 40 total sculptures across Huntsville and Madison, Alabama, with over 27 temporary installations and 14 permanent installations across 7 partner sites.

Sculptures are installed on level concrete pads ranging from 3'x3' to 6'x6'. Artists must securely anchor sculptures to the concrete pad with tools and bolts provided by the artist. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, permanence (structural soundness, resistance to theft and vandalism, suitability for adverse weather), and public safety. All accepted artists receive a $1,500 honorarium to offset installation and removal costs; artists selected to exhibit two works receive $2,500. Artists are responsible for all costs including travel, hotel, tools, equipment, and labor for delivery, installation, and removal. The SPACES Sculpture Trail will receive a 10% commission on all sales during the exhibition. Sculptures will be insured by the host site for their insurance value during the exhibition period (February 2019 – January 2021).

Applications must be submitted through CaFÉ online system with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 high-resolution images of the sculpture, artist resume/CV, artist bio, artist statement, sculpture weight, materials used with explanation of environmental durability, insurance value, minimum pad size required, installation process description, previous SPACES exhibition history, and installation date preference. Installation dates are January 29 – February 2, February 8 – 9, or February 13 – 15, 2019. There is no application fee. Curatorial committee review occurs the week of December 3, 2018, with artist notifications the week of December 10, 2018.
