About This Call
Southern Utah University, in partnership with the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the Utah Division of Arts & Museums Public Art Program, requests qualifications from Utah artists and/or artist teams interested in creating site-specific artwork(s) for the Leavitt Business Building West. The new building will include a sales center, graduate programs, interview rooms, instructional space, study rooms, faculty offices, and a large lobby designed to encourage student collaboration. It will be connected to the existing Business Building via a skywalk on the second floor.
The Selection Committee seeks an artist able to enhance the building experience by creating work that accentuates the carefully designed architectural elements. Preference will be given to artists demonstrating high skill and mastery of medium, with attention to detail and craftsmanship. The installation must not present a safety risk and must be durable for public display. Work may be static or dynamic. Work produced using artificial intelligence is discouraged; if AI is used, it must be disclosed and be an essential and integral element of the overall medium. Suggested locations include the outdoor plaza space, the high-volume interior main lobby, suspended in the main lobby, integrated into the skywalk area, incorporated into functional building elements (flooring, handrails, glasswork, screen walls, ceiling treatment, lighting), or distributed throughout common spaces. Installations on the wood feature wall of the main lobby, inside faculty offices, study/interview rooms, secluded areas, or exterior surfaces will not receive preference.
A budget of $107,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, support structures, insurance, shipping, travel, and installation. Eligibility is limited to artists or artist teams living in Utah or with connections to Utah who have a U.S. Tax ID Number. The entry deadline is June 21, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Semi-finalists will be selected to present full proposals in September 2024 and will receive an honorarium to help defray proposal development costs, which will be applied toward the final commission amount.
