Southeast Community Center Pool Renovation Public Art Commission

The City of Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art program seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team based in the Kansas City area to design art for the Southeast Community Center pool renovation, located at 4201 E 63rd St, Kansas City, MO 64130.

2-5 semifinalist artists will be asked to propose designs for installation on the pool's west wall, an interior wall in the natatorium. The wall is constructed of concrete masonry units and measures approximately 30' H x 58' W. All artwork must fit within these dimensions and within a standard doorframe, with assembly on-site as needed. The facility will be finished before the art is installed. The wall contains a fire alarm strobe and possibly other fixtures that semifinalists will need to address in their designs. All artistic elements may be required to comply with applicable building codes, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 2018 Uniform Building Code.

Semifinalists will be paid a $1,000 design fee. The selection panel will use four evaluation criteria: excellence, relevant prior experience, appropriateness to the site and project, and durability. Artists should address potential water splashing and the scale of the wall in their proposals. The finalist artist's proposal will be presented to the Municipal Art Commission for approval prior to contract development. The goal is to install the art before winter, though the timeline is open to negotiation with the finalist artist. Work sample requirements: 1-10 images, 0-3 videos, 1-13 total samples.
