About This Call
The Art in Public Places Committee (APPC), on behalf of the City of Jacksonville and Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, is soliciting qualifications from artists to create a permanent public artwork or mural on an exterior wall façade along the Southbank Riverwalk. The artwork will be located on a 60-foot wall on the south side of the walkway beneath the Main Street Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida. The wall surface is approximately 60 feet in length by 9 feet in height, with a roughly finished textured concrete coating. The primary goal is to integrate public art into the redesign of the Southbank Riverwalk, bringing vibrancy and increased walkability to Downtown Jacksonville.
The artwork must be permanent, surface adhered or attached to the existing wall (examples include 2-D/3-D painted murals, mosaics, and reliefs) and cannot protrude into the walkway. It must be designed to be permanent, tamper proof, virtually maintenance-free, able to withstand a high traffic public environment, and designed with consideration of public safety. The budget for the artwork is $8,500.
Eligibility is open to experienced artists 18 years of age or older residing in Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Baker, or Nassau County, Florida. Artists must have successfully completed at least one similar scope artwork project using the materials they propose, and must demonstrate successful experience executing permanent commissioned work in outdoor and exterior spaces. Applications must include a letter of interest (1000 character max), resume or CV, artist statement, up to three professional references, and a portfolio of up to eight images of recent related artwork (minimum of 4). The anticipated schedule includes invited artist notifications in early-mid January 2015, design proposals due by end of January/early February 2015, final artist selection by mid-February 2015, and artwork completion in March 2015. Artists invited to submit a proposal will receive a small stipend. Contact Christie Holechek at 904-358-3600 ext. 12 or [email protected] for further information.
