About This Call

Artists currently living in South Dakota are invited to submit artworks for consideration for the South Dakota Governor's 8th Biennial Art Exhibition, a juried traveling exhibition celebrating the quality and diversity of visual art being produced in the state. The mission is to recognize and encourage South Dakota artists, promote the artistic identity of South Dakota, celebrate its cultural and artistic heritage and future, and encourage community and connection across artistic communities within the state.

The traveling exhibition will launch at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, then travel to the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, the John A. Day Gallery at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, and the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls. The exhibition tour runs from January 25, 2019 through January 19, 2020. Each exhibiting institution will designate up to $1,500 in Purchase Awards (totaling $6,000) for artworks selected to become part of their permanent collections.

Eligibility: Artists must be currently living in South Dakota with no conflict of interest due to employment at exhibiting institutions. Only new artworks completed within the last three years may be submitted. Submitted artworks may be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional in any visual media including painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, fine crafts, traditional/folk arts, video art, and artist books. Entry fee is $25.00 for up to three artworks. All artworks submitted must be owned and created by the submitting artist and must be for sale. Exhibiting institutions receive a 30% commission on artworks sold. Artists are responsible for insurance in transit; exhibiting institutions provide insurance upon receipt and throughout the exhibition tour. Artworks must be finished, in good condition, and ready to hang/install when delivered. Packaged artworks must not exceed 75 lbs and must not exceed 96 inches on their longest side or 165 inches in longest side plus girth combined. Submission deadline: October 28, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. Mountain Time. Acceptance notifications will be emailed between November 13-16, 2018.
