About This Call
Artists currently living in South Dakota, or enrolled members of one of the state's federally recognized tribes, are invited to submit artworks for consideration for the South Dakota Governor's 11th Biennial Art Exhibition. This juried exhibition is the premier showcase for artists currently living in the state and celebrates the quality of visual art being produced in South Dakota. The biennial exhibitions will travel to multiple institutions across the state over the course of one year, and the catalog serves as a historical record of the state's current artists and art practices. A limited number of artworks will be selected through a competitive process, juried by representatives of the exhibiting institutions.
Only new artworks completed within the last three years may be submitted. Submitted artworks may be 2-D or 3-D and must be original works in any visual media, including painting, drawing, original prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, fine crafts, traditional/folk arts, video art, and artist books. All artworks submitted must be owned and created by the submitting artist and must be for sale. Exhibiting institutions receive a 30% commission on artworks sold through the exhibition.
The entry fee is $25.00 for up to three artworks. Submissions must include 1-3 images in high resolution jpeg format (no more than 1200 pixels on longest side, minimum 300 dpi), along with artwork titles, media, framed/finished sizes, prices, educational and exhibition experience, and a brief artist statement under 1,000 characters. Each exhibiting institution will designate up to $1,500 ($6,000 total) for Purchase Awards. Accepted artworks will be included in the exhibition catalog and will travel to: South Dakota Art Museum (Feb 8—Jun 1, 2025), Washington Pavilion (Jun 20—Sep 14, 2025), University Art Galleries-USD (Oct 29—Nov 14, 2025), and Dahl Arts Center (Dec 13, 2025—Mar 29, 2026).
