South Dakota Governor's 10th Biennial Art Exhibition

Artists currently living in South Dakota are invited to submit artworks for consideration for the South Dakota Governor's 10th Biennial Art Exhibition, a juried traveling exhibition and premier showcase for artists in the state. This biennial exhibition celebrates the quality and diversity of visual art being produced in South Dakota. The exhibition will travel to multiple institutions across the state over one year, and accepted artworks will be documented in a catalog serving as a historical record of the state's current artists and art practices. Purchase Awards totaling $6,000 (up to $1,500 per exhibiting institution) provide opportunities for artworks to be collected and preserved within significant public art collections.

Eligibility and Requirements: Only new artworks completed within the last three years may be submitted. All artists living in South Dakota are eligible unless employed at one of the exhibiting institutions. Submitted artworks may be 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional original works in any visual media, including painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, fine crafts, traditional/folk arts, video art, and artist books. Entry fee is $25.00 for up to three artworks. All submitted artworks must be owned and created by the artist and must be for sale; a sales price will be required on the loan agreement. Exhibiting institutions receive a 30% commission on artworks sold.

Submission Details: Submit high-resolution digital images (jpeg/jpg format, no more than 1200 pixels on longest side, minimum 300 dpi) with artist's name and work title. Submissions must include detailed information: artwork titles, media, framed/finished sizes, prices, educational experience (up to 4 listings), exhibition experience (up to 6 listings), and artist statement (under 1,000 characters). Submission deadline is December 6, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Acceptance notification will be emailed December 12, 2022. Accepted artworks must be delivered to the South Dakota Art Museum or Dahl Arts Center between December 14, 2022 and January 6, 2023. The exhibition will tour: South Dakota Art Museum (February 11 - May 14, 2023), John A. Day Gallery (June 19 - August 4, 2023), Washington Pavilion (August 25 - November 12, 2023), and Dahl Arts Center (December 8, 2023 - March 30, 2024). Unsold artworks will be available for pickup in April 2024.
