About This Call
Sound Transit is seeking two Lead Artists for light rail stations in the northern extension of the Link system in Seattle, WA. One artist or artist team will be commissioned as Lead Artist for Brooklyn Station and one for Roosevelt Station.
Each Lead Artist will create a major artwork for their respective station and serve as a design team member to contribute to the overall station design and art integration process, as well as identify art opportunities for additional artists. The budget is $360,000 per commission, distributed as $60,000 for design team participation, artwork concept and design, and $300,000 for fabrication and installation.
Brooklyn Station is located at Brooklyn Avenue NE, between NE 43rd St. and NE 45th St., Seattle WA 98105. Roosevelt Station is located at 12th Avenue NE, between NE 65th St and NE 67th St, Seattle, WA 98115. Both are underground stations approximately 80-90 feet below street level with platforms 380 feet long and 38 feet wide.
Artists must submit up to 20 digital images, an artist statement, résumé, and responses to posed questions through CaFE. Artists may apply for both commissions by submitting up to two separate applications. A panel will select three artists per site for interviews, then select one artist per site to join the design team. Artists traveling to Seattle for interviews will be reimbursed for pre-approved travel costs including per diem.
The design process runs from October 2011 through December 2013, with station opening anticipated in 2020-2021. The selected artist will participate in a project orientation and research phase before presenting concept designs. Final design development will include integration into construction documents and a detailed implementation budget. Structural engineering drawings stamped by a Washington licensed engineer will be required for most concepts.
