About This Call

Soulful is a national exhibition featuring work from African American artists across the United States. The exhibition is open to functional and non-functional work in all mediums, including 2D, 3D, fine art, and fine craft. Held in honor of Black History Month at the d'Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia, the exhibition is open to all African American artists, 18 or older, residing in the United States. All work must be original, created without the aid of an instructor or kit, and produced within the last five years. The d'Art Center is Norfolk's thirty-year-old art center located in the NEON district, featuring working professional artist studios and exhibitions open to the public.

The exhibition runs February 7-28, 2019, with a reception on February 7th from 5:30-7:30pm. Artists may submit up to 3 artworks for a $35.00 entry fee. Accepted works must arrive by January 31st, 2019. The juror is Ken Wright, a Richmond native and BFA graduate of Norfolk State University. Awards include 1st Place ($500), 2nd Place ($300), and 3rd Place ($150). Artists will be notified by email by January 18th, 2019.

Works cannot exceed 40 pounds. All 2D works must be equipped with hanging hardware. 3D works requiring special presentation must include those displays. Works requiring special installation must include clear instructions, and complicated installations must be installed by the artist. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs and must provide pre-paid return labels through UPS or FedEx. The d'Art Center is not responsible for damage during exhibition. Commission on sold works is 60% (artist) / 40% (d'Art Center), not including awards.
