About This Call
Something New is a public art exhibition program in downtown Bainbridge Island, Washington, sponsored by Arts and Humanities Bainbridge (AHB), the Bainbridge Public Art Committee (PAC), and the City of Bainbridge Island (COBI). The program places sculptures in five outdoor locations: the pedestal in front of T & C on Winslow Way and Erickson, the pedestal at the south end of Madison Ave S. (in the Doc's plaza), the pedestal at the entry door of Bainbridge Island City Hall building, Waterfront Park, and west of the Senior Center near Waterfront Park. Selected works remain on display for approximately 11 months before being removed to make room for the next collection.
The program is open to regional artists from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, California, and possibly Vancouver, BC. Up to five artists will be selected and each will receive a $2,000 honorarium, with an additional $1,000 People's Choice Award available. Artwork must be completed at submission, suitable in scale for outdoor public art, and able to withstand weather, vandalism, and pedestrian contact. Artwork will be on loan to the City during the exhibition period and must be available for sale to the public. If a sculpture sells, it cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition period. A 25% commission will be paid to COBI with funds deposited into the COBI Public Art Sub Fund. Concrete pedestals are provided for display, and the City will maintain liability insurance during the exhibition period.
Artists must deliver and oversee installation of their sculpture in July 2022 and be present for removal in June 2023. Artwork cannot be shipped. Submission requirements include artist resume, artist statement, contact information, sculpture description, site preference, 3-5 images with annotated image list (2000 word limit), and acknowledgment of the sample contractual arrangement. Each artist may submit up to five sculptures via email to [email protected]. The application deadline is June 2, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selected artists will be notified on June 13, 2022, with an official opening reception scheduled for August 5, 2022.
