About This Call
Something New IV is a public art exhibition program in downtown Winslow on Bainbridge Island, Washington, sponsored by Arts and Humanities Bainbridge (AHB), the Bainbridge Public Art Committee (PAC), and the City of Bainbridge Island (COBI). The program places sculptures in five outdoor locations: the pedestal in front of Town & Country Thriftway on Winslow Way and Erickson, the pedestal at the south end of Madison Ave, S. (in the Doc's plaza), the pedestal at the entry door of Bainbridge Island City Hall building, and two locations in Waterfront Park (one west of the Senior Center and one along the pathway heading east). Selected works remain on display for 11 months before being removed to make room for the next collection.
Up to 5 artists will be selected and each will receive a $1,000 honorarium. One artist will also be eligible for a $1,000 People's Choice Award. The program is open to regional artists. Artwork must be completed at submission, suitable in scale for outdoor public art, and of high artistic quality. Sculptures must require minimal maintenance, withstand weather and pedestrian contact, and not impede traffic. Artwork will be on loan to the City during the exhibition period and must be available for sale to the public. If a sculpture sells, it cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition period. A 25% commission will be paid to COBI. Concrete pads and bolts are provided by PAC/City Engineer. Artists are responsible for delivering and overseeing installation in July 2021 and being present for removal in June 2022. Artwork cannot be shipped.
Submissions must include artist resume, artist statement, contact information, sculpture description, site preference, 3-5 annotated images (2000 word limit), and acknowledgment of the sample contractual agreement. Each artist may submit up to five sculptures via email to [email protected] or via Dropbox. The application deadline is April 30, 2021 at 5:00 PM PST. Selected artists will be notified May 12, 2021. An opening reception is scheduled for August 6, 2021 in conjunction with First Friday Art Walk. Artists will be featured on AHB, Currents, and City of Bainbridge Island websites, with potential interviews on Bainbridge Community Broadcasting.
