About This Call
The City of San José is developing a public art project for a city park adjacent to a new community center and library designed by Rob Wellington Quigley, FAIA. The project is located at 3590 Cas Drive in San José, adjacent to an elementary school, sports fields, and a basketball court.
The public art opportunity requires presence in the park, specifically the play area. Integration into the adjacent building(s) is not required, though ideas of connectivity could be considered. The City is seeking an artist to serve as an artistic lead while working in collaboration with the design team to create a new kind of play area that will also function as a work of art. The elementary school already provides a traditional play structure, so the focus is on creating something distinct.
Required application materials include: an Artist Statement of Interest (2 pages maximum) addressing your interest in the project, themes/concepts you might explore, your notions of play and its relationship to art and community, unique perspective or experience you bring, experience collaborating with architects and design professionals, and your schedule and availability; a brief summary of relevant past experience (1 page maximum); a current résumé (maximum 3 pages); and 10 digital images representing no more than 5 previously completed projects, with descriptive text explaining each project and image.
