About This Call
The Surface Design Association (SDA) International Exhibition In Print showcases contemporary artists and designers working with or inspired by fiber art and textile-based materials, methods, and techniques. Selected work will be featured in the Fall 2019 issue of Surface Design Journal, which is read by artists, gallery owners, curators, scholars, and enthusiasts nationally and internationally.
The 2019 theme is "Soft Borders," exploring borders as dynamic areas where opposites meet and innovation is born. Artists are encouraged to submit work of any size or format demonstrating the use of fibers or textile-based media, including nontraditional materials and techniques. Work may embrace traditional 2D and 3D forms or challenge contemporary definitions of textile/fiber-based art, including digital, time-based, conceptual, installation, land, book, sculptural, basketry, textile, wearables, fashion, interior design, product design, and craft-as-social-practice. Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility: Open to all artists. Work must have been completed since January 1, 2017. Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible. Artists may enter up to three artworks. Entry fee: $20 for SDA members, $45 for non-members. Entries submitted online through CaFÉ from February 1 through May 31, 2019. Submission requires up to 3 artworks with maximum 2 images per artwork (1 overall image and 1 detail). Images must be JPEG only, 1200 pixels or larger on longest side, 72 ppi/dpi, maximum 5 MB. Each image must be titled as "Submission #/Last name/Title." A brief artist statement of 50-100 words is required. Selected artists will receive one complimentary print copy of Surface Design Journal. Award categories include: Craft and Community, Next Generation Award, Fiber Reinterpreted, Innovation in Technique, Material Exploration Award, Surface Design Award, and Guest Juror Award. Award honorees will be featured with expanded coverage in the publication. Artist notification of acceptance: June 28, 2019. Publication date: September 20, 2019.
