About This Call
The Social Practice And Community Engagement Artist in Residency program (SPACE AIR) at Franklin and Marshall College seeks emerging and mid-career artists with demonstrated experience or commitment to social practice and/or community-based projects. Prospective residents must be from or currently living, working, or studying in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Experienced artists are defined as individuals with a regional or national exhibition record, public speaking experience, and openness to collaboration.
The residency runs each semester (Fall and Spring) and includes five Labs led by interdepartmental faculty and staff as well as local experts, covering topics such as trauma-informed practice, cultural competency, and effective community communication. Residents must conduct a minimum of three community-based engagements open to the public and participate in one-day orientation, monthly open studios, office hours for F&M students, regular check-in meetings, and an artist talk. The residency closes with an exhibition in the Winter Center for Visual Arts galleries.
Residents receive 24/7 access to a private studio space, access to darkroom, printmaking, digital, sculpture, painting, and drawing studios, access to Franklin and Marshall College libraries and the Phillips Museum of Art archives, emotional/trauma-informed support via on-campus health services, a final exhibition in collaboration with the Phillips Museum of Art, and a stipend of $20,000 (includes supplies and travel). Work sample requirements: 10-12 images, 0-5 audio files, 0-5 video files, 10-20 total samples. Event dates: 8/1/21 - 2/11/22.
