About This Call
This is a semifinalist round for a mural competition for AREA 1 of an Extra Space Storage building located at 141 McBride Street, Jamaica Plain, MA. Semifinalists have been selected based on previous work submitted and will each receive a $500 award. The winning finalist will receive a $5,000 commission for their design and for completing the project through to installation.
Participants must create a site-specific design reflective of Jamaica Plain, whether its community, history, or other tangible or intangible aspects of this neighborhood. The visual style may be abstract, representational, or anything in between, and must be viewable from a range of distances. AREA 1 wraps around the northwest corner of the building, directly facing English High School to the north and the Southwest Corridor Park to the west. The north side is approximately 1,077 sq ft (33' 8" x 37' 4") and the west side is approximately 1,107 sq ft (34' 7" x 37' 4"). Imagery may wrap around as one continuous image or be two separate images.
Submission materials must be uploaded to CaFÉ by July 13, 2021 at midnight and include: artist statement (same as first round application, max 2,000 characters), theme/concept description (max 3,000 characters), community involvement details if applicable (max 2,000 characters), publicity availability confirmation (max 2,000 characters), up to 3 letters of reference from large-scale art projects, up to 15 JPG images of the to-scale design (5mb per file limit), and an image key describing the design and techniques used (max one page). All documents must not include artist name or team name in any submitted documents or filenames. Finalists will be notified on August 14, 2021. The final art must be provided to the mural painting company in Adobe Illustrator or PDF vector format.
