About This Call
The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery invites teens ages 13-17 to submit original portrait artwork for the 2nd Annual Teen Portrait Competition. Portraits can be created in any medium—painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, or other time-based media—and may be traditional, representational, or experimental. Self-portraits are accepted. All submissions must be based on the teen's direct contact with living individual(s).
To enter, teens must be legal residents of the United States or its territories, ages 13-17 on the day of entry. The competition is free to enter. Submissions are digital only and limited to one entry per person. Each submission should include the teen's name, age, location, medium, and a one-sentence artist's description. Work must be original; plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.
The Smithsonian will award 12 prizes total across two age groups (13-15 and 16-17). Grand prize winners will have their portraits displayed in the National Portrait Gallery during spring 2014 and receive a $300 Visa gift card. Five honorable mention winners in each age group will be featured in an online exhibition and receive a $50 Visa gift card. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges including five teens, National Portrait Gallery Curator Dorothy Moss, and two guest judges. Entry deadline: November 15, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MST. For more information, visit npgteenportrait.org or contact [email protected].
