About This Call
The City of Denver's Public Art program seeks to commission a Colorado artist or team of artists to create a site-specific public artwork at the Smiley Branch Library located at 4501 W. 46th Ave. in the Berkeley neighborhood. The library, built in 1918 and listed on the National Register for Historic Places, will undergo significant renovations while maintaining the integrity of its original design. The art selection panel is seeking an artist or team who can engage the neighboring community and highlight its strong connection to this facility.
Possible locations for artwork include the exterior front of the library to create a welcoming area for lingering, interior main level walls in alcoves above the fireplace or adjacent to the circulation desk for two-dimensional murals or paintings highlighting the library's historical significance, or an artist-in-residence position involving community workshops and a permanent public art project. The selection panel is open to two and three-dimensional artwork in all media, materials and formats, including interactive, kinetic, tactile, sound or light components. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, using highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for public spaces exposed to physical stresses and potential vandalism.
Eligibility is open to artists residing in Colorado, regardless of background or experience level. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. The budget is approximately $10,000 USD, inclusive of all project costs including design fees, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and travel. Applicants must submit six digital images of previous work, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. From these applications, three to five finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals and present to the selection panel. Finalists will receive an honorarium and be required to submit a Diversity & Inclusiveness Form. Teams may apply with one résumé per team member.
