About This Call
Small Town Big Art invites artists to apply for public art opportunities in Maui County. Three open opportunities are currently available: Performances & Public Art Inspired by Maui Storytellers, Kahului Mural, and Lānaʻi Story Animations. All applications must include a "Talk Story" selection from the organization's website to form the foundation of your proposal.
The program follows a collaborative process beginning with a 4-6 week call period where artists submit ideas and samples for community panel review. Selected artists then engage in 2-3 weeks of project development with the team to determine fit and community engagement activities. Community engagement follows for 2-12 weeks, during which artists, program partners, and collaborators gather community input to create a revised project blueprint. Artists work with Hale Hōʻikeʻike at the Bailey House/Maui Historical Society to connect community input with Hawaiian proverbs from Mary Kawena Pūkuʻi's ʻŌlelo Noʻeau. Final projects are presented through unveilings, performances, or blessings, and documented through project web pages with process images, stories, media coverage, artist statements, and short documentaries.
Applications must be submitted via CaFÉ by August 15, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fee is $10.00. Applicants may apply as single artists or multi-person collaborative groups. Work samples should include 3-6 total samples (0-5 images, 0-3 audio files, 0-3 video files). Required application materials include artist bio, résumé, statement of interest, project description, project budget, and work samples. Projects must address the distinct sense of place, history, and/or culture of a Maui County neighborhood. Budget varies per project category. Artists will be required to provide all tools, equipment, technology, knowledge, and labor necessary to execute the proposed project. The County retains ownership of video and photo documentation; artists retain copyright of their works. All professional artists are welcome to apply regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion or affiliation, or mental or physical disability.
