About This Call
Scottsdale Public Art is accepting qualifications from artists for a temporary public art opportunity at SkySong, the Arizona State University's Scottsdale Innovation Center. The selected artist(s) will create a temporary art project using the iconic shade structure of SkySong both as inspiration and as a setting. The temporary project must utilize and enhance the technology currently used to program lighting for the shade structure, activate the space below the shade structure, and put in place permanent infrastructure for future installations. The target date to inaugurate the temporary project is March 2013 for the Education Innovation Conference held at SkySong. The temporary nature of the art could be extended for several months, depending on the nature of the installation and the technological needs for the artwork.
Artists working in the fields of time-based sculpture, performance, light, digital, projection, and event-based work are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have demonstrated experience in producing public art events or installations. The total project budget is approximately $150,000.00 and includes costs of purchasing materials, the artist's time for design, fabrication, installation and de-installation, travel, conference calls, taxes, and insurance. A successful temporary public art project in this setting will have both a day and night-time presence and will engage audiences with interactive elements and/or compelling, fresh content.
Shortlisted artists will be invited for an in-depth site visit to SkySong to review the site, learn the capabilities of programming the shade structure, and understand the community of innovators at SkySong as well as the surrounding community of residences and businesses. Selection criteria include the applicant's professional qualifications, proven ability to undertake projects of a similar scope, artistic merit as evidenced by submitted materials, and demonstrated ability to work with government agencies and stakeholders. The project is open to all artists. Selection panelists, City of Scottsdale employees, Scottsdale Cultural Council employees, Board Members, Volunteers, and their immediate family members are excluded from participating. Work sample requirements: minimum 3 images, maximum 5 images.
