Skulls and Roses

Art Works Downtown invites San Francisco Bay Area artists to submit artworks about transformation, remembrance, or rebirth for the exhibition Skulls and Roses. All visual arts media are welcome. The exhibition intends to offer catharsis during this time of transition out of the pandemic while correlating to San Rafael's Día De Los Muertos celebration. Submissions are not required to include skulls or roses nor do they need to be in the style of Día De Los Muertos. In correlation with the exhibition and community celebration, AWD will include a community altar as part of the exhibition.

Eligibility is limited to San Francisco Bay Area artists only (artist must live within 100 miles from San Rafael, California). Artwork must not exceed 72" including frame, stand, and all materials. Original artwork only; no giclées or reproductions, though editions are acceptable if they are original works such as printmaking, photography, or limited original digital art. Images of explicit sexual content or violence will not be considered. Submissions must not have previously exhibited in the AWD 1337 Gallery. Artwork must be for sale. Video artists must include dimensions of equipment in the application and provide all equipment—including headphones—for the exhibition. The entry fee is $40.00. Submissions require 1-3 work samples (images and/or videos).

Entries are due September 2, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT via CallForEntry.org. Notification by email will be sent September 9-10. Accepted entries must be hand delivered September 24-26, 10am-4pm. The exhibition runs October 1–November 12, 2021. An opening reception and Art Walk will be held October 8, 5-8pm, and a closing reception and Art Walk on November 12, 6pm (both subject to change depending on pandemic safety). Unsold artwork may be picked up November 13-14, 10am-4pm. Art Works Downtown accepts a 40% donation upon sale. Artists who do not retrieve their work will be charged a storage fee of $3.00 per day; works remaining after 30 days become property of Art Works Downtown. The juror is Camilo Villa, a Colombian interdisciplinary artist, designer, activist and educator based in Oakland, California, and Art Gallery Director at San Francisco State University.
