About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is accepting applications from artists or teams of artists for a permanent artwork commission at a local community skate park. The selected artist will be required to engage the skate park community before presenting their project proposal. There is no overarching theme or required medium; the theme will be determined from the artist's engagement with the skate park community.

The selection process begins with application review, from which the Artist Selection Committee will choose three finalists for interviews. Each finalist will receive a $200 honorarium, with additional travel costs potentially covered for out-of-area artists. Skype interviews are available. From the three finalists, one artist or team will be selected to complete a community engagement exercise and develop their project proposal for Committee and City Council approval. The proposed artwork should be original, site-specific, complementary to the surrounding area, and made with durable, low-maintenance materials that can withstand skating, hot weather, sunlight, power washing, and other elements.

The Santa Clarita Skate Park, located at the George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex, features 40,000 square feet of riding space including a snake run, 10-foot square bowl, u-shaped half pipe, and street skate area. The park is open 365 days a year from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with annual attendance of approximately 50,000. The budget for the artwork is $8,000, with the artist responsible for design, fabrication, transportation, and installation costs. Payment can be made in two or three installments, with final payment after project completion. Installation is planned for winter/spring 2019. The artwork must reach permanency of a minimum of 25 years. Artists 18 years or older, including emerging artists with no civic or public art experience, are eligible to apply. Application deadline is July 9, 2018. Finalists will be notified by July 20, 2018.
