About This Call
The City of San José Office of Cultural Affairs' Public Art Program is seeking an experienced artist or artist team to submit Statements of Qualifications to develop a permanent artwork for the Showcases located in the Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport Terminal B in the pre-security area between Passenger Ticketing and Baggage Claim.
The Activated Art Platform is located adjacent to the Baggage Claim area, under the escalators between arrivals and departures on the main level and includes two showcases. Each showcase is 15 feet long and four feet six inches wide with data, power, lighting, and ventilated equipment space. The call seeks a sculptural approach with the goal of an impactful, permanent, robust artwork. Curatorial parameters will preserve the transparency of the Showcase volumes with lightweight, low-density interventions. Proposers should consider intricate Showcase Artworks that benefit from being seen in close proximity but would otherwise be vulnerable in a public venue. Silent or very quiet actuation (if any) is required. Light-based and projected work is impractical due to ambient light during daytime and visual diminishment at night.
Work sample requirements: 8 images (required), 0-2 videos, 8-10 total samples. Up to three finalists will be selected to prepare Presentation Proposals and will be paid $1,000 each for this phase. The selected finalist will enter into an agreement with a total project budget not to exceed $290,000, including: Artist Fee of $25,000 for design proposal, construction documents, and presentations; Fabrication and Installation up to $250,000; and a $15,000 contingency for unforeseen costs. Presentation Proposal Submittal Deadline is May 15, 2019.
