About This Call

BoyntonArts seeks multiple sculptors to create outdoor works for five apartment developers and one hospital in Boynton Beach, Florida. With one application, each artist will be presented to all developers and the hospital over the next two years for potential selection, providing six unique opportunities with six different selection panels.

Three sculptures will join "Cavalcade" by Albert Paley and anchor the Cultural District at the prime downtown intersection, linking City Hall, Library, Arts & Cultural Center, the Marina and the bridge to the beach. A total of $1.4 million will be spent on new commissions or existing works ranging from $75,000 to $300,000. Artists can present past work for a new commission or propose the sale of existing work. All sculptures must be resistant to hurricane force winds, ultraviolet light and salt air. Some developers have specific requirements: The Pierce by Affiliated Development seeks an engaging, educational sculpture celebrating Boynton's connection to the Atlantic Ocean with elements such as coral reef, fish, sea mammals, or fishing themes. Bethesda Hospital wishes the artist to integrate moving water with the sculpture.

Sculptures will be sited on wide sidewalks near streets with backgrounds of 3 to 7 story buildings, or at Bethesda Hospital in a grassed landscape between the entrance and parking lot. Works should be engaging to pedestrians and have strong visual impact day and night. All styles are welcome—abstract, narrative, figurative, pop, collage—but durability and repairability against wind, sun, salt air, fading, graffiti and scratches are essential. By the Art in Public Places ordinance, sculptures should last as long as the buildings. Applicants must have experience creating public sculpture, ability to secure general commercial liability insurance, and international eligibility with ability to receive payment through USA banks. Artists not previously commissioned for public art with the private sector or the City are given extra consideration, as are artists with life experiences from Florida's diverse ethnic and cultural communities.
