About This Call

The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts and the Local Selection Committee of Eastern New Mexico University, Portales seek to commission an artist or artist team to create and install artwork in the newly renovated Roosevelt Science Center on campus. The Roosevelt Science Center, originally constructed in 1953 and renovated with an addition in 1995, houses the university's science department faculty offices, classrooms, labs and interpretive learning exhibits. The building currently serves approximately 42,000 square feet and hosts courses in biology, chemistry, ecology, fisheries and wildlife, microbiology, physiology, entomology and pre-med.

The commission seeks two-dimensional artworks of all media suitable for installation on wall surfaces, including weaving/fiber, installations, painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, and new media. Artwork themes should reflect the building's science-centered focus and can range from representational to abstract. Artworks must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, safe for children and adults, and meet all applicable code requirements including ADA compliance. Murals or artwork directly drawn/painted onto walls will not be considered. Artworks incorporating water features, or those requiring complex maintenance are not suitable. Artists should consider the available installation locations and site measurements when developing proposals.

$132,500 is available to commission the artist or artist team for 1 to 3 designated areas within the Roosevelt Science Center. This amount includes all fees and expenses associated with the project including materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, identification plaque, and documentation. Up to five finalists will be invited to submit formal proposals and will receive a $1,000 honorarium plus travel stipends based on distance ($500 for 50-300 miles one-way, $900 for 301-800 miles one-way, $1,800 for 801+ miles one-way). Finalists must participate in an in-person presentation on the ENMU campus in Portales. Submission deadline is November 26, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applicants must submit 5-15 images and/or up to 3 videos of previously created work, a current resume or CV, and an artist statement addressing their artwork approach, style, perspective and background.
