About This Call

The Rotary Club of Oregon City, in collaboration with Clackamas County Arts Alliance, is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for a significant public artwork in the form of a bas-relief mural. The project will be sited at the base of Singer Falls, adjacent to the Main Street business community in downtown Oregon City, serving as a gateway and link between "uptown" and "downtown." The artwork will be presented as a legacy gift from the Rotary Club to commemorate the Club's 75th anniversary and will embody the Club's mission and motto: "Service Above Self." Total budget is $34,500.

The artwork will be affixed to an 11 ft high cement retaining wall on an operational railroad line. The site provides opportunity for a 2-dimensional artwork approximately 25 ft long x 8 ft high, protruding no greater than 2" from wall. The work should be designed to be viewed from at least 20 feet away and must attract the attention of approaching and passing drivers without causing a hazard. Any energy-driven object must require minimal energy consumption and maintenance needs. All materials used must be sturdy, durable and require little ongoing maintenance. The Rotary name and gear symbol must be incorporated as a design element intrinsic to the work. The artwork must comply with public safety and ADA standards, be safe, durable and easily maintained, and reasonably discourage theft and vandalism.

The project is open to professional artists or artist teams in the United States. Interested artists or artist teams must submit qualifications and a brief artist's statement providing adequate information to describe a conceptual approach to the project. Artists/artist teams must be available for an interview on or about April 11, 2011, and the selected artist/team must be available for project development and coordination between May and early November 2011. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. PST Monday, March 14, 2011. Submit 10 images with your application.
